Here's the latest news from the South Fork of Bishop Creek:

This year's water and property owner's meetings were held on Saturday July 3rd, 2010 at the Schoenherr's home. A community potluck was held the same day at the residence of Betsy & Steve Miller. The following was discussed at the Property Owner's Association meeting:

bulletProperty Owners Association fees are now $25 for homes and $15 for lots. Please send a check to Betsy Miller.
bulletA sheet was circulated to property owners that attended the meeting to allow conservation corps work parties to come into the area to clear brush to reduce the wildfire fuel load on vacant lots and between homes. ALL property owners must agree to this, otherwise the crews cannot come into the neighborhood. Contact Kena Schoenherr for more details.
bulletTraining was presented by Kena Schoenherr concerning the monetary grant the community received. In-kind work must be done in 2010 and 2011 to match the grant money the area received. Please fill out forms or send an email documenting work done to reduce fuel load to Kena. As an example of how the grant money is being spent, a large dumpster was brought into the area over the 4th of July weekend and the vacant lot to the south of the Leavitt's house had the sagebrush thinned out. Other residents trimmed trees and removed excess brush and placed it in the dumpster.
bulletSee the water company page on this website for more details about the water company meeting.

Neighborhood Newsletter - A wonderful newsletter was produced in the spring of 2010 and sent to all property owners in the South Fork of Bishop Creek. Kena Schoenherr is currently working on another newsletter.

Dumpster - The communal trash dumpster is still located on Mount Tom View Road near the pump house. Residents should have received a key. The dumpster is currently emptied each Tuesday.

Older news:

During the week of August 10th, 2009, the main water tank for the community sprang a leak. It was quickly repaired by welding over the faulty section. The welder gave a rough estimate of 3-5 years as the remaining life-span of the tank. See the water company page for more information.

The Forks Fire burned over 3,000 acres in late July 2009. The fire was lightning caused and ultimately required the evacuation of Aspendell and the South Fork of Bishop Creek. No structures were lost in the blaze.

Internet Service - Schat.net in Bishop is trying to obtain permission from the Forest Service to install a repeater site to bring broadband internet to Aspendell and the South Fork of Bishop Creek. Over 4th of July weekend, 2009, petitions were circulated in both hamlets stating the need for faster and more reliable internet service than is currently available. 53 people signed the petitions, which were forwarded with a cover letter from the property owners association to the Inyo National Forest Supervisor.

Lightning Strike Starts Fire - on August 5th, 2008, a dry lightning storm started a fire just above Big Trees Campground, giving the community a scare. Firefighters responded with air tankers, helicopters and handcrews and were able to get the blaze under control. The fire ultimately burned about 100 acres. Hose Boxes Installed & Stocked - During the summer of 2008, metal boxes were installed next to each fire hydrant. The frames were fabricated by Gary Olson and set in concrete by a neighborhood work crew. The boxes have been stocked with fire hose and fittings and residents were told how to obtain a key to the cabinets. More information can be found by clicking here.
